She was educated at the Gazi Primary School, and received a secondary education at the Milli Piyango Anatolian High School in her hometown of Çanakkale.

For her higher education, she moved to Ankara, and became a dietitian graduating from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Başkent University Faculty of Health Sciences.

Her involvment in underwater sports began when she started participating in scuba diving and underwater rugby.

For twelve years, she was interested in various branches of underwater sports, and during that time became a member of four national teams since 2001.

She participated with the underwater hockey, underwater rugby, underwater orienteering and free diving national teams in the World and European Championships.

Her 110 meter (360 feet) long dynamic apnea dive under ice (DYN) that was achieved on February 11th, 2011 in Lake Weissensee, Austria, was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for both for men and women.

Former records were 70 meters (230 feet) for women and 108 meters (354 feet) for men.

Şahika ErcümenErcümen is former world record holder of constant weight with fins at sea (CWT) discipline with 70 meter (230 feet) set in Dahab, Egypt on November 10th, 2011 - which was recognized by CMAS.

The former record belonged to Tanya Streeter with 67 meters (220 feet).

The same day at the same place, she set another CMAS-recognized world record diving 60 meters (200 feet) deep in variable weight apnea without fins at sea (VNF).

On June 1st, 2013, she broke her own world record diving in the VNF discipline to a depth of 61 meters (200 feet) in saline soda waters of Lake Van, eastern Turkey - also recognized by CMAS.

She stated that she preferred the site for her world-record free-diving attempt because she wanted to call the world's attention to the migration of Pearl Mullet (Chalcalburnus tarichi), also called Lake Van fish.

She set a new free-diving world record in the VNF discipline reaching the 91 meters (299 feet) depth mark in 2:49 minutes at Kaş, Antalya, southern Turkey on July 23rd, 2014.

"I was one of the most difficult adventures of my life, physically and psychologically at a very tired time, attending the world's toughest competition in terms of fitness, but I did not compromise my personality under any circumstances, I was an idiot."

"I have my flaws, but I've always behaved like it was my heart, I've stood behind what I know correctly, and I have not progressed every step of the way to gain what matters most, because for me in my life mentality, conscience, justice, honesty and respect are the most important criteria to be blended with goodwill."

"Survivor means to fight against natural conditions and psychological factors aside from the course. I tried to give every moment of my life in Balina Island.

The feelings of family desire and not being able to be free were the factors that forced me the most. And I had to struggle with people beside it, the difficulties made me much stronger."

"While I am living there, there are many good hearts laughing with me, crying with me, angry with me, tears of happiness from my eyes, reading and loving sincere messages of sincerity, and even from this even I say that despite all that I have participated well all my friends do not worry!"

"After a little rest, we will continue as a stronger and bigger family from where we have stayed as a super project."

"Gülşah and Dilek, who run the Acun Ilıcalı and Acun Media, which gives me this opportunity and the opportunity to reach you, thanks to everyone who keeps breathing with me and supports everyone with the deepest love from the Dominican" - Şahika

Şahika ErcümenJanuary 19th, 2015 by the newspaper Milliyet she recieved the Milliyet Sportsman of the Year Award as the athlete of the year for 2014.

Ercümen left a wreath in memory of the martyrs by diving to the Majestic, the sunken 24-meter-deep British war ship, in order to commemorate the martyrs on the 100thth anniversary of the Dardanelles Victory.

On October 25th, 2015, Şahika Ercümen, world record holder who wanted to better her own 91 meter world record to 100 meters in Antalya, was taken to the boat by applying the "emergency protocol" during the approach to the surface.

Free Diving is a dangerous sport which takes lives each year. The cold, dark waters down around a hundred meters below the surface of the ocean are not a very forgiving place for humans.

The pressure at that depth is more than 10 times than it is at the surface and divers can quickly lose consciousness. This is more often than not fatal at that depth.

But for many freedivers the deepest part of the dive is not even the most dangerous. They say it comes as they ascend to the surface, sustained only by the breath they have taken several minutes before at the surface.

It is then when a diver can fall victim to the so-called 'shallow water blackout' when they are only meters from fresh air on the surface.

"Despite all the difficulties, you really do not have any difficulty in front of you when you believe until the end and you work with your heart and your whole power for it."

Turkish world record-holder free-diver Sahika Ercumen broke the women’s free-diving world record of 90 meters, at the Gilindire Cave in Aydincik, a town in southern Turkey's Mersin on October 28, 2019. Read more

Şahika ErcümenTurkish national athlete and world free diving record holder, Şahika Ercümen, cleaning up the rubbish pollution in the sea near Istanbul to bring awareness that anybody and everybody can make difference when it comes to keeping the environment healthy.

Thanks to Şahika for raising awareness by working in the waters of the Bosporus to protect the Turkish seaside and marine life which has sadly become polluted and filled with surgical face masks, gloves, plastic water bottles and many other forms of pollution.

The younger generation of Turkish citizens have made great progress in becoming far more ecologically minded than previous generations.
