Ruxandra Porojnicu

Ruxandra PorojnicuRuxandra Porojnicu, born on the 5th of July, 1993 in Bucharest, Romania.

She is a Romanian actress and model known for her portrayal of Alina Pop in the British soap opera Coronation Street from 2019 onwards.

While Porojnicu was attending university, she spent time in America as part of her studies and seeing a "different way of life" inspired her to move away.

She received a degree in acting and puppetry from the University of Bucharest, and numerous theatre credits.

At the age of 22, she left Romania to live in London. Porojnicu stated that although she loves Romania, she left since she felt that career opportunities there are limited.

Porojnicu has spoken about having to "start over" when she moved to England. As upon moving, she only had £300 to her name.

She Immediately got a job at Pizza Express, and took acting classes. She also began working as an extra and doing modelling, some of which was unpaid, so that she could build a portfolio.

Ruxandra PorojnicuPorojnicu got signed to an agency that specialised in advertisements with an acting department, where she received an audition for the role of Alina Pop on the ITV soap opera Coronation Street.

She received the role, and has appeared as Alina since 2019. For her role, she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2019 Inside Soap Awards.

She now has more than 40.3k followers on Instagram (@ruxandraporojnicu). The Romanian actress, born and raised in Bucharest, graduated from the National University of Theatre Arts in the capital.

She started her acting career by starring in short films, fashion ads and music videos.

Then, in 2015, Ruxandra moved from Bucharest to London to realise her dream of becoming an actress.

Ruxandra has attended Black Lives Matter protests in London, and is also invested in health and fitness, having run the 2020 London Marathon.

The young actress is also passionate about a number of social causes, including modern slavery, human trafficking and humanitarian health drives, which she raises awareness about on her Instagram profile below.

Ruxandra PorojnicuSince 2011, the Salvation Army - UK has supported more than 10,000 victims of #modernslavery back into safety. That's why Ruxandra is ran for them in the London Marathon.

Ruxandra said: “It’s was hard running on my own but I knew I had to do it. Like a lot of charities The Salvation Army is having such a hard time, such a financially difficult situation."

“That was one of the reasons I knew I had to run, to raise money and help them in this little way that I can. They keep going and helping people."

“In Romania the situation is worse now. There will be more people coming to the UK and the chances of them being exploited will be even bigger. I just wanted to do my bit to help.”

"There are thousands of people being trafficked in UK and more than 40 million worldwide!! Modern slavery has many types, such as forced labor, domestic servitude, bonded labor, forced marriage, and child labor."

"Lots of people are being exploited in front of our eyes - they are forced to work for little or no money in car washes, restaurants, nail bars and construction sites."

Ruxandra Porojnicu"Some people are kept as domestic slaves in a home where they must cook and do cleaning and looking after children. Others are forced to commit crimes against their will."

"Modern-day slaves are not normally held by chains and locks but by threats and fear - traffickers will force someone to work against their will to pay off a debt."

"They are threatened by being told they are going to hurt them or their families and by telling them that no-one will help them if they run away."

The Salvation Army provides, through a Government contract, safe places to stay; financial support, access to counseling, legal and medical services - whatever each individual needs to get their life back on track.

"I am running for the Salvation Army because I am one of those people who left their home country in order to build a better future for themselves and their families."

"I am running because ''there is no them, there is only us."

Ruxandra Porojnicu"I am grateful for every single one of you who will decide to support the organizations that help these people with as little or as much as possible."

Coronation Street character Alina Pop first appeared on television screens back in March of 2011 as part of the people trafficking plot line.

Prior to joining Corrie the star had featured in modelling campaigns, music videos and adverts.

In regards to the human trafficking plot line, Ruxandra opened up on Instagram about how it had a heightened importance for her owing to her background.

She wrote: “As an immigrant, moving abroad with just £300 in my pocket, I could have been in this situation."

“It is a great responsibility to be the voice of someone who went through this experience and I truly hope this storyline will make a change and will bring awareness in our society."

She then added: “I feel so privileged to be part of such an iconic production! I’m learning so much working here and I’m very grateful.”

“It was a little scary to move to London, but I grew up with that American type of perspective which says that if you dream big and work hard, you’re going to make it happen."

Ruxandra Porojnicu“I knew in London that I would get money, experience, and meet people from different places. There are so many opportunities, so for me, it was really worth it. I love my country, but there aren’t so many opportunities there.”

Corrie' star Ruxandra Porojnicu has been told to 'go back to her own country' by online trolls

Coronation Street actress Ruxandra Porojnicu has revealed she receives vile insults on social media from trolls, who tell her to "go back to your own country".

The Romanian actress joined the show as Alina in 2019 as part of a hard-hitting modern slavery storyline in which her character was trafficked to work in a nail bar.

Soap bosses chose to keep her as a regular cast member and she has recently become embroiled in a romance storyline involving long-running character Tyrone.

Recent episodes have seen Tyrone try to convince Alina to leave in order to salvage his relationship with Fiz, but he will subsequently confess he has fallen in love with Alina.

Ruxandra PorojnicuThis storyline has put Porojnicu on a collision course with abusive fans of the show on social media platforms.

"The way the storyline has gone I’ve found the reactions to be quite mixed, which I was not expecting," Porojnicu said.
