Nataliya Dobrynska, born May 29, 1982 in Brovary, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine is a heptathlete. She is the 2008 Olympic champion and also holds the heptathlon best in the shot put. Her indoor pentathlon best of 5013 points is the world record for the event. She also competed in the 2004 Olympics, finishing eighth. She won the silver medal in the pentathlon at the 2004 World Indoor Championships and the bronze medal at the 2005 European Indoor Championships. She finished sixth in the heptathlon at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. At the 2007 European Indoor Championships she finished fifth. She won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, beating teammate Lyudmila Blonska by 33 points. Despite being one of the favourites in the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Dobrynska finished fourth just missing out on the medals. She returned to the podium at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, taking second place in the pentathlon behind reigning heptathlon world champion Jessica Ennis.

Dobrynska competed at the 2010 Hypo-Meeting in May, but she was in sub-par form and managed only a score of 6023 for seventh place (over 600 points behind Jessica Ennis' winning mark). In spite of this she proved herself as a contender to the gold medal at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in July. After the first day, Dobrynska ran a 200 meter best of 24.23 seconds and was in second place – 110 points behind the Ennis, who led the competition. The following day she scored a best in the javelin at 49.25 meters and was 18 points behind Ennis with one event remaining. She finished the competition with an 800 meter run of 2:12.06, another personal best. Her total score of 6778 points was her best ever performance and beyond Carolina Klüft's championship record. However, Ennis took the gold, also setting a personal best, leaving Dobrynska with the silver medal – her first podium finish at the European Athletics Championships. She returned to competition at the 2010 Décastar meeting in September and was the runner-up behind Tatyana Chernova, having a total of 6309 points from the event.

The following year she finished in fifth place at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, getting a total of 6539 points and setting personal bests in the hurdles at 13.43 seconds and 800 meters in 2:11.34 minutes. At the beginning of the 2012 season she won the Ukrainian indoor title with a national record score of 4880 points. She produced an even better performance at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Although defending champion Ennis was the pre-event favourite, Dobrynska had a consistant tally, including personal bests in the long jump at 6.57 meters and the 800 meters in 2:11.15 minutes to become the first woman ever to score over 5000 points for the indoor pentathlon. Her world record mark of 5013 points bettered Irina Belova's twenty-year-old score from 1992. Later that month, Dobrynska's coach, Dmitry Polyakov, died of cancer. Polyakov was originally a boxing coach but started working with Dobrynska in 2007 and lived to see her set a world record of 5013 points in the pentathlon in Istanbul this year, the first woman to score over 5000 points in the indoor combined events discipline.

The 2012 Ukrainian indoor championships started in spectacular fashion with a pentathlon national record of 4880 points by 2008 Olympic Games champion Natalya Dobrynska in Sumy in 2012. Her performance added 29 points to her own record set two years ago when she got the silver medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships and moves her up from 10th to sixth in the world and European all-time rankings. Dobrynska started off by clocking 8.35 in the 60 meter hurdles, just two-hundredths off her best. She then went over 1.84 meters in the high jump, two centimetres shy of her absolute best before sending the shot put out to a huge 16.46 meters. She finished off her day with 6.36 meters in the long jump and 2:15.90 for the 800 meters.

“I decided at the beginning of the season, along with my coach, that I wanted to go to this year's World Indoor Championships. As I was out of the medals at last year's World Championships, I didn't qualify directly so I desperately needed to compete and do well at the national championships,” Dobrynska told the Ukraine athletics federation website uaf.ua.org

“However, the cold weather in the Ukraine meant I had to adjust my training and I didn't do all the work that I had planned. As a result, I never imagined I was going to score so highly here and the way things have worked out here has already inspired me and I now expect to do even better in Istanbul,” she added.

Her result in Sumy means that Dobrynska will have the chance of revenge on Great Britain's Jessica Ennis, who beat her to the gold medal not only at the 2010 World Indoor Championships but also at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.
