Ölüdeniz - Turkey Ölüdeniz
Ölüdeniz is a town near Fethiye in Turkey reknown for its Blue Lagoon. The village and the beach by the lagoon were locally known as Belcekız or Belceğiz before the area became a magnet for mass tourism. These days many people in the area have no idea what Belcekız is so the town as well as the lagoon are now both known as Ölüdeniz - literally meaning "Dead Sea" which originally referred only to the lagoon itself. Inland to the north about 2 kilometers from Ölüdeniz are the villages of Ovacık and Hisarönü that had occasional family-run guesthouses only a decade ago, but are today concrete sprawls of hotels and bars built almost without a gap between them and the town of Ölüdeniz. Both Ovacık and Hisarönü serve as bedroom communities that offer accommodation that is close to but less expensive than accommodation in Ölüdeniz proper. Ölüdeniz is not far from Fethiye and connects to Fethiye with a wide road that is well-paved and is in very good condition. Travel between the two is easy as there is also a very frequent minibus - Turkish: dolmuş services between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. There are a number of companies in Ölüdeniz that offer paragliding opportunities from the summit of nearby Mt. Babadağ which is about 1,900 meters above sea level. A flight from the top of Mt. Babadağ to the beach takes around an hour and offers breathtaking views of the Blue Lagoon, surrounding valleys and the mountains covered with pine forests. Training and tandem flights are also available for those who have no experienced with paragliding. Other activities are going to Butterfly Valley - Turkish: Faralya which is a remote canyon to the south on the sea-shore with some rare butterflies and waterfalls. Both boats and minibuses can take you there from Ölüdeniz. In Ovacık to the north of Ölüdeniz is the official beginning of the Lycian Way which is a 500 kilometer hiking trail that leads all the way east to Antalya.
