Muğla - Turkey Muğla
Muğla is a very pleasant city nestled in the foothills of Mount Asar onto the plain that bears its name and is the seat of the Province of the same name. Despite having the charm of a typical inland Turkish city and being fairly close to the resort towns popular with international travellers like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Dalyan most travellers often overlook Muğla. Muğla lies on an elevation of 670 meters so it is a significantly cooler climate which makes for a welcome retreat from hot and sticky conditions along the coastline resorts. The closest airports are Bodrum-Milas in Bodrum to the west and Dalaman Airport in the city of Dalaman to the south - both of which are about an hour away from Muğla. Both of these airports welcome domestic as well as international flights during the tourist season from April to mid October. This thoughtfully developing, modern, peaceful and clean city is famous for its unique architecture. Muğla houses with white-washed walls, red-tiled roofs, characteristic chimneys and distinctive Ottoman-style architecture have been placed on the Turkish protected historical buildings list. Since the economic development of the city in part relies on tourism the natural, cultural and historical amenities of Muğla have always been sustained. The city of Muğla is also a hub for transportation with mini-buses and motor coaches running directly from the Otocar (Bus Station) to all neighbouring towns, resorts and other major cities of the country. Muğla University was built in 1992 in Muğla and it has grown substantially in the fifteen years since its foundation. In 2006 the number of students reached 16,000 - with a faculty of 700 teachers in 122 different departments and programs. Muğla is well worth a visit if you enjoy the more traditional atmosphere of Turkish culture.
