Marmaris - Turkey Marmaris
Marmaris is a port city and a tourist resort on the Mediterranean coast in southwest Turkey in the Muğla Province. The main source of income for Marmaris is tourism which has left very little of the sleepy fishing village that Marmaris was just a few decades ago due to the construction boom of the 1980s. Marmaris still retains its appeal due to its exceptional location between two intersecting sets of mountains by the sea. The Marmaris nightlife rivals anything on the Turkish coast for mainly British on holiday. It is also a stop-over for Blue Cruise sailing and for diving having two major and several smaller marinas. There are also regular ferry services to the Greek island of Rhodes and it attracts large cruise ships at the port. Marmaris has a Mediterranean climate characterized by a hot and humid summers with cooler and rainy winters. Showers and rain are very unlikely between May and October with hot and humid weather prevailing - temperatures may reach over 40°C at times during the hot months in July and August. October is generally still warm and bright with spells of rain - many tourists preferring to visit during the early autumn around September because the temperatures are not as hot. Winters are mild and wet as winter is the rainy season with major precipitation falling after November. The annual rainfall can reach to 1181.8 millimeters or 46 inches but the rainfall is concentrated during days in winter falling in heavy cloudbursts which cause flooding at times in flood prone areas. There are flights to Dalaman, the nearest regional airport about 100 kilometers away from Marmaris. Coach transfers take 1 1/2 hours and the Dalaman Airport is served by many operators such as Thomsonfly, FlyThomasCook, EasyJet and the Turkish airline Onur Air. Transfers are easily arranged on-line and there are frequent bus connections which correspond to the arrival of domestic flights provided by Havaş. The Havas bus tranfer schedule is detailed outside the airport terminal building. Tourists from the UK have to buy a Turkish multiple entry visa at the point of entry costing £10 with Bank of England notes which are valid for 180 days entry for visits of up to 90 days duration. The busy beaches, bars and restaurants and plenty of shopping offer visitors round the clock activities and Marmaris has a wild and crazy nightlife with a street devoted to the high tech clubbing scene. Bar Street is opposite the busy bazaar and will satisfy the most discerning clubbers with it's huge outdoor dance venues going to the early hours of the morning.
