Fethiye Fethiye is a city and district of Muğla Province in the Mediterranean region of Turkey and one of Turkey's better known tourist resorts - having in the last decade become a major destination for British tourists and ex-pats. Fethiye was formerly known as Makri and the Greeks when deported from the area, under the terms of the 1923 exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, then founded the town of Nea Makri (New Makri) in Greece. Modern-day Fethiye is located on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos - the ruins of which can be seen in the city including the Hellenistic theatre. Telmessos was an important city of Lycia with a recorded history beginning in the 5th century BC. Fethiye is a tourist town with an international atmosphere, an excellent marina and good night life. The town also serves as an excellent base for touring the inland country-side, and is one of the few cities in the world where you'll find sarcophagus in the streets. These pre-Roman Lycian relics are especially spectacular when floodlit at night. The town has a population of around 50,000 but the population increases dramatically during the high season, from April to end of October, when foreign residents spend their summers at their second homes. Blue cruise companies operate sailing services that ply the coastal waters from Bodrum to Marmaris and along the peninsula to Antalya. Day trips can also be booked on these wooden sailboats called gulets and include lunch and stops at different places. The nearest airports served by international airlines are at Antalya or Dalaman. Antalya is about three hours driving and Dalaman about one hour from Fethiye. There is also a bus service from Dalaman Airport to Fethiye which is operated by the transportation company Havaş.
