Bozyazı - Turkey Bozyazı
Bozyazı is a town as well as being a district of Mersin Province on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey situated 220 kilometers west of the city of Mersin and about 275 kilometers east of Antalya. Bozyazı is a remote coastal district with the Taurus Mountains sitting in its backyard. The roads over the mountains or along the coast from either direction can be very difficult to drive making Bozyazı too far from large cities or the established centers of tourism to attract many visitors, keeping the district rather quiet and unspoiled. Although lately there are developments of holiday villas in some places, often owned by Turks as well as foreigners. Due to the lack of tourist development the beach is uncrowded and the sea is clean. Bozyazı is also home to an important colony of the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. The narrow coastal strip has a temperate climate and is used to grow bananas along with strawberries, citrus fruits, nuts, and a variety vegetables and other fruits. The higher land which consists of over 50% of the district is used for growing apples and walnuts. On the forest edge there are areas of cedar and fir trees below the highest peaks which are Tol Dağı at 1,250 meters, Azıtepe at 780 meters, Susmak Dağı at 1,600 meters, Kaş Dağı at 1,639 meters and Elmakuzu Dağı at 1,690 meters.

Above the coastline there are areas of high meadows within these mountains which are used for summer grazing and the Bozyazı River rushes off Elmakız through a rocky gorge. There is a dam and hyrodelectric power station 14 kilometers north of Bozyazı. About 60% of the population of this area lives in the town of Bozyazı, with this small town providing high schools and healthcare to the surrounding villages. There are two other small towns - Tekmen and Tekeli and about 40 smaller villages. The biggest village is called Karaisali. These are sleepy places where the residents are conservative - with old and young spending the evening sitting by the sea spitting out sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Bozyazı is also situated only about 14 kilometers from Anamur where there is a growing tourist presence with accomodation, restaurants and facilities.

The ruins of the ancient city of Nagidos are on a hill above the town of Bozyazı. They are being excavated by a team from Mersin University who have found traces of occupation going back to the Hellenistic period of the 4th century BC, when Nagidos was an outpost of Rhodes and Samos, a small port established to trade goods from Egypt and Cyprus. The town was subsequently controlled by Egyptians, the ancient Romans, the Byzantines and eventually Seljuk Turks.

Bozyazı has a Mediterranean climate having long, hot and dry summers with cool and rainy winters.
