Antalya - Turkey Antalya
Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey that is rich in history and art. The old town called Kaleiçi has narrow, winding streets enclosed within ancient city walls. Although there are other entrances, the most impressive way of entering and leaving the old town is from the ancient Hadrianus Gate - built by the Roman emperor Hadrianus as the entrance arch to the city. Antalya has an excellent archaeology museum and plenty of historic buildings and ancient ruins nearby. Most of Antalya's historic buildings can be seen along the narrow, winding streets of Kaleiçi. Noteworthy sites include: Yivli Minaret, Karatay Medresesi, Hıdırlık Tower, Ahi Yusuf Mescidi, Iskele Mosque, Murat Paşa Mosque, Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque, Balibey Mosque, Musellim Mosque, Seyh Sinan Efendi Mosque, Hadrians Arch, and the Clock Tower. Many structures date back to the Hellenistic era. The Antalya Museum has an extensive archaeology collection. It is believed that the first inhabitants of this region were Hittites who settled here around 2500 BC coming from Iran and Mesopotamia. After further immigration the Persians reigned here - which was ended by Alexander the Great in the year 334 BC. Finally the Pergamon King Attolos II came to this region in the middle of the 2nd Century BC in search of Paradise and he succeeded in winning control over the Pamphylian region. He established the city Attalia (Antalya) - which was integrated into the Roman Empire only 30 years later. Throughout centuries there have been power struggles between different groups of populations. The city was integrated into the Ottoman Empire probably in 1391. After a brief occupation by Italian troops at the end of World WarI but came into Turkish possession again in 1921. Throughout the centuries the city was under different rulers - all of whom left evidence of their presence and it can still be seen around Antalya.
