Sabine Hazboun, born on June 11, 1994 in the city of Bethlehem in Palestine is a swimmer that is only eighteen years of age. She has been living and training in Barcelona and missed her last year of high school in order to train. Expenses, including funding for their coaches, were provided by the Olympic Solidarity Committee. But next year they’ll have to raise funds themselves. Hazboun goes to St. Joseph’s School for Girls and is a member of the Catholic Amal Club. She was trained by Michel Ateek and then by Khader and Micheline Bandak. Since 2007, her swimming coaches have been Sabri al-Khatib and Amani Hamdan. Sabine has always had a flair for water activities. She has shown a special aptitude in swimming and is adept at four swimming strokes. Through regular exercise and training, she has achieved a top position in Palestine’s Tenth Swimming Championship, and recently she was selected to participate in the FINA World Swimming Championship that will take place in Manchester, England.

In spite of her young age, she has set new records in freestyle and backstroke. Like all Palestinian athletes, Sabine suffers a lack of official support for swimming and facilities but vows to do all she can in order to find the moral and financial support she needs. Hazboun does her swimming training in the center of D'alt Rendiment, in the city of St. Cugat, Barcelona, Spain. She hopes to obtain a medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She first began swimming in 2003 and considers swimming as her identity and as a hobby. How did she feel when she heard that she was selected to represent Palestine at the Olympics?

Hazboun said "I have lived my whole life in Palestine and this is a great honor for me to tell the whole world about Palestinian Sports and to be an ambassador for Palestine through my international participation."

Hazboun extended her sincere thanks to the Palestinian Olympic Committee and to the Palestinian Swimming Federation for selecting her and allowing her to achieve a dream that she has pursued since childhood.

Her most important swimming achievements - obtaining first place in all the national competitions and championships since 2007, and at the international level she has achieved new records for Palestine in the 50 meters freestyle and butterfly.

  • World Swimming Championships: Manchester - 2008 / Rome - 2009 / Shanghai - 2011.
  • Doha Gymnasiade Championship, Doha - Qatar 2009.
  • Arab Championship for swimming schools - Lebanon 2010.
  • The Asian Games, Guangzhou - China 2010.
  • The Olympic Games for youth - Singapore 2010.
  • The Arab Games, Doha - Qatar 2011

On Friday August 3rd 2012 at 10:00 the Women’s 50 meter freestyle heats will begin. Hazboun will race in the fourth heat in lane 6. She is one of the favorites to win her heat and her qualifying time puts her within reach of advancing to the semifinals later that day. She is the youngest member of the current Palestinian Olympic team.

Palestine was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the 1930s. In fact, this is the fifth time that Palestinians have taken part in the Olympics, the first being in 1998. Since Palestine isn’t a state, Palestinians have to compete in the World Championships that are held before the Olympics and win points that make them eligible as “participants.” Until now, all the Palestinian competitors have been swimmers.
