Fernanda González

Fernanda González, born April 25, 1990 in Mexico City, Mexico is an Olympic and National record-holding backstroke swimmer. She swam for Mexico at the 2008 Summer Olympics. As of the end of March 2012, González is currently Mexico's only Swimming qualifier for the 2012 Olympics. As of March 2008, González holds the Mexican Records in the long-course 50 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter backstrokes, as well as in the short-course 25 meter 100 meter and 200 meter backstrokes. At the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, she set the Games Records by winning the 50 and 100 meter backstroke events in 30.61 and 1:04.28 seconds. In the 100 meter backstroke, González also bettered a 20-year-old record set by Costa Rica's Silvia Poll of 1:04.43 at the 1986 Olympic Games.

In Mexico City González destroyed the Mexican all-time record twice in one day in the 200 meter backstroke. Fernanda won the gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke in the Grand Prix in Columbus, Ohio with a record of 2:10.75, which qualifies her directly to the 2012 London Olympics after meeting the requirement of brand A by the International Swimming Federation. In Ohio, the best swimmer of Mexico and the pupil of coach Armando Fernandez, destroyed for the second time in one day the Mexican all-time record in this event. In the morning session she was leading the overall ranking for the 200 meter backstroke with 2:11.58, which bettered the record set in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai. Fernanda González became the first swimmer for Mexico to meet International Swimming Federation requirements. She also won the silver medal in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.96, which means González will be present at two events in the London Olympic Games in 2012.

The amazing thing about this Mexican girl who is now the best swimmer in Mexico today is that she suffered a fear of water. Just approaching a pool disturbed her immensely - "I was terrified when they tried to get me to swim," she says.

Although from an early age she learned to live with her fears, she greatly disliked the idea that in her school swimming was part of the school curriculum. As it was, she always managed to avoid swimming classes. She even asked her mother to tell her teachers that she was sick.

She was only enthusiastic about gymnastics, ballet and dance. Even baseball was part of her athletic pursuits. But one day her mother, Mary Monica Ramirez, acquired a membership in a sports club of the Federal District and decided to register her brother Sergio in swimming lessons. The decision was not discussed, and the idea did not make her happy, but she promised she would try to learn as quickly as possible because she was then big enough to learn to swim.

Fernanda went to swimming lessons taught by Armando Fernandez. With him she began to learn to swim, and to date he is still her coach. Gradually she lost the fear of water and after four years she remembers sitting on her parents' bed while watching the Olympic Games in Atlanta on television with the family.

"Every time the Olympics were held in my house I did not look anything other than sports," she recalls. She says the impression that was left by the legendary records of Carl Lewis caused her to visualize her future and she said - "I want to be Olympian." She said it without even knowing what that meant and all that it would demand of her to strive to deserve it.

"I saw my mother enjoying the event and I said, 'What do those people do to get on TV? I want to be like them.'"

And now Fernanda González is just that. She is an Olympic athlete competing in the Olympics for the second time and setting records along the way...
