Paola Espinosa, born July 31, 1986 in Mexicali, Mexico is an athlete who competes in diving and represented Mexico at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and again at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she was her national team's flagbearer. She won a bronze medal in the 10 meter Synchronized Platform with her partner Tatiana Ortiz. Espinosa won the gold medal in the 10 meter platform at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. In 2011 she participated at the 2011 Pan American Games where she won the gold medal at the 10 meter platform individual and synchronized events as well as gold in the 3 meter synchronized springboard event. She qualified to participate in both platform events at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Paola is a Mexican diver who has competed twice in the Olympics. In Athens 2004, with her specialty jumps on 10-meter platform, she placed twelfth in the individual category and in fifth in synchronized. She was selected for the Olympics after having participated in the National Olympiad 2002 competition in which she won the gold medal in the three meter springboard. That same year shhe was part of the national team and went to the podium for Mexico with Laura Sanchez during the ninth Grand Prix of Canamex in which the duo won the gold medal in the three meter synchronized. She participated individually in the Caribbean and Central American Games in El Salvador 2002, winning a pair of gold medals. The first, in the one meter springboard and the other in the three meter springboard. By 2003 Paola participated in this same event together with Sanchez in the World Championships in Barcelona and won the bronze medal and obtained in this way their ticket to Athens. This achievement was enough for both competitors to be recognized by the National Sports Awards that year.

During the Santo Domingo Pan American Games held in August of that year, Paola Espinosa again teamed up with Sanchez and both achieved two medals. A silver in three meter springboard synchronized and a the other in the 10 meter platform. In February 2004, the young diver got her second ticket to the Olympic Games after remaining seventh in the three meter springboard individual at the World Cup held in Athens, Greece. In that same contest, along with Jashia Moon, she won the bronze medal in the 10 meter synchronized, which entitled her to compete in Olympic Games in that event.

In 2007, with Paola as the great figure of the team, Mexico closed its participation in the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand with a total of 11 medals - three gold, three silver and five bronze - achieving the best result of her career in this type of event and finish in 16th place in the overall standings. She became the highlight of the event after being three time champion at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Laura Sanchez and Paola Espinosa edged out and left the second position to Ting Li and Hou Yuanyuan of China and the third place went to the American duo made up of Amanda Miller and Christina Loukas.

In August 2008 she was a heroine of the Mexican National Team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing National Stadium. On August 12, she 2008 won the bronze medal in the 10 meter synchronized platform along with her partner Tatiana Ortiz, another Mexican Olympic Gold Medalist. In July of 2009 in Rome, Italy with the best performance of her life Espinosa made history by becoming the new world champion of diving in the 10 meter platform, after a perfect performance of "10" at the Foro Italico in Rome. With that, she became the first Mexican diver to win a world title. In April 2010, the Mexican diver was second on the first day of the second stop of the World Series of Diving. Espinosa, platform world champion, won the silver medal in that event on the first day of the second stop of the World Series of Diving in Veracruz, Mexico.

Espinosa has the hope of one more victory:

"I want to be Olympic champion. I know I'm very close, every time I get over, the judges already know me and my coach is very excited that we will do well in London. Why not be the first woman from Mexico who made history in diving. That bronze I liked - I went up to heaven and the stars, because it is an Olympic medal that not everyone has. But I'm back. I'm here and I will continue dreaming of what's coming," says Paola. "After Beijing I returned happy but I never expected the reception I had here in my country from my family and the media. She enjoyed the medal won in synchronized diving with Tatiana Ortiz and it left a great taste, but that I had placed fourth in the singles still left me very hungry to go back to the Olympic podium."

Her Mexican fans like to say that Paola Espinosa can defeat her rivals merely by showing up in a bathing suit, but her Chinese coach Ma Jin says that beyond her good looks is an exceptional talent for diving off of a platform. Espinosa is Mexico's great hope to win a gold medal at the London Olympic Games, where she will try to snatch first place away from Chen Roulin of China. She beat the Chinese divers in Beijing in 2008 and realizes they aren't invincible.

"If I did it once, why not do it twice," she said.
