Kusadasi is one of the most popular holiday resorts of Turkey, located at 90km south of Izmir, in the Aegean region and close to the famous ancient city of Ephesus. Kusadasi is a famous tourist destination for its sandy and golden beaches and for its sunny and temperate days. The city also boasts one of the largest and most modern marinas in Turkey, with a capacity to provide service for 600 boats.

Around the city there are still remains of Ottoman and Turkish mosques, like the "The Fortress Mosque" that is the most impressive mosque of the city where it is possible to see fine works in wood. The "Hanim Mosque" is another good example of the finest work of Ottoman architecture. Also to the south of the city there are many historical cities to visit like the Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis, Goddess Artemis, the House of the Virgin Mary, Seven Sleepers, Didyma, Priene, and Miletos.

Thanks to tourist development, the city grew considerably and today has many facilities for the visitors as well as a great environment for enjoying holidays. Around the city it is possible to find many hotels, restaurants, shops, as well as an increasing and lively nightlife.

Kadinlar Denizi Beach is the most famous in the city and is located 3km south from town, but is very crowded in high season, much like the Pamucak Beach 15 km north of town on the road to Selcuk.

The Mosque district is situated on a flat area where narrow streets crossed each other horizontally. The house blocks between those streets were so narrow that only two houses could stand next to each other. The main parts of the houses generally faced the street and had courtyards in the back. The mountain district, since the houses and gardens were built in terraces like famous terraced houses of Ephesus, didn't obstruct each other's view. They were typical Ottoman houses. Most off them had large eaves and salient parts with classical tile roofs. Today only small parts of these walls surrounding the ancient Ottoman city are left. One of the most outstanding ruins left is the castle door which has an archway with a tower rising on top. In its inner corner there is a fountain with a tombstone at its base and another used as its drinking basin.

In the recent years many hotels, camp sites, resorts, and summerhouses were built in the city as well as in the suburbs. Meanwhile, a yacht marina was built and the port premises were built and enlarged. Today Kusadasi is one of the most important tourism centers of Turkiye. The rich historical sites and wonderful beaches are not the only reasons for this as the climate of the region also plays an important role. Clean sands in the north and south, named Tusan, Akyar, Otuzbir, Kadinlar Denizi, Aslanburnu, Karaova, Guzelsamli, Buyuk ve Kusuk Kalamaki, Ilyas Aga, Disburun, and Tavsanburnu Beaches are kilometres long. The total length of those sandy 6 shores is over 20 km. Aside from those wide shores there are also deep bays with sharp rocks suitable for diving.

Pigeon Island really deserves to be a symbol of Kusadasi. The eye-catching view of the island, uniting with the panoramic colors of sunset, attract all visitors. As the island was much-frequented place of birds during the seasonal migrations, it was named Bird Island.

In the times of Ottomans, the name of the island was given to the town and it started to be called "Kusadasi" (Bird Island). Since then, the name of the island has been changed into "Pigeon Island". The island was used for military purposes during the Ottoman Era and before, as the location of the island was strategic for securing the shores and preventing attacks from the sea. The Byzantine castle standing on the rocks was used for protection from pirates and is known as "Pirate Castle".
