Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is a fast, beautiful, and luxurious car built in small numbers to cast a holy light on the rest of the manufacturer's fleet. While Alfa Romeo certainly has a long history in racing and high performance vehicles, it also builds thousands of small, efficient cars for European families. The 8C Competizione debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, and its sweeping curves and powerful engine promised to bring real Alfa design, engineering, and power back to the market. With only 500 built, though, it is a rare gem. The 8C in the car's name stands for "otto cilindri," Italian for eight cylinders. The last Alfa to wear the 8C designation was the 8C 2900 of 1936. The 4.7-liter V8 has 450 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automated transmission with paddle shifters. That, plus an all-carbon fiber body built for speed on a steel chassis constructed for handling, means a 0-62 time of 4.2 seconds, and an official top speed of 180mph. www.alfaromeo.com |
