Federica Pellegrini, an Italian swimmer, was born on August 5, 1988 in Mirano, a province of Venice. She currently resides in Verona and the women's 200 meter freestyle (long course and short course) and 400 m (long course) freestyle world record holder. At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Pellegrini became the first woman ever to breach the 4 minute barrier in 400 meter freestyle with the time 3:59.15. Pellegrini is the first female Olympic champion in the history of Italian swimming and also the only Italian swimmer to have set world records in more than one event. Pellegrini's first international podium was at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where she won the silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle at the age of 16, becoming the youngest Italian athlete ever to win an Olympic medal in an individual event. Pellegrini's first long course gold medal came at the 2008 European Championships in Eindhoven, where she won the 400 meter freestyle setting a world record (4:01.53).

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, she arrived as the world-record holder and favourite for the gold medal in the 400 meter freestyle, but only finished 5th in the final. On the same day, she recovered from that disappointment by setting a world record in the heats of the 200 meter freestyle and in the final she broke her own world record (1:54.82) winning her first Olympic gold medal. Pellegrini also proved her strength in short course events at the 2008 European SC Championships in Rijeka when she won the gold medal in the 200 meter freestyle at a world-record pace (1:51.85). At the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Pellegrini broke the world record in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:00.41 to better Joanne Jackson's record of 4:00.66. At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Pellegrini broke the world record again in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 3:59.15, winning the gold medal and in doing so becoming the first female swimmer to break the 4 minute barrier in the event. In 2010 Pellegrini announced that she would be working with Laure Manadou's former coach, Philippe Lucas. After a very successful 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, Federica parted ways with her French coach and began working with Federico Bonifacenti.

Her father, Roberto, used to be a parachutist and works in a luxury hotel in Venice at present. Her mother is the secretary at the swimming pool in via Olimpia, which is located in Mestre. Another sports legend from her family was her grandfather, Gastone, who had been an Italian wrestling champion. Federica was a part of Serenissima Nuoto, which was her first club, and was coached by Elena Piatto. At present, she swims for C.C. Aniene club, where she is coached by Gianni Nagni and Alberto Castagnetti. Pellegrini made her first Olympic appearance at the 2004 Athens Olympics and took away a silver medal for her second-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle event. She participated at the World Championships – Long Course, held at Montreal in 2005 and won a silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle event. In the same year, Federica Pellegrini won her first gold medal at the European Championships – Short Course for her impressive performance in the 200 meter freestyle held in Trieste.

The following year, Pellegrini participated in the World Championships – Short Course held at Shanghai and took home a silver medal for her excellent perofmance in the 200 meter freestyle event. She also won a bronze medal in the 400 meter freestyle event at the same tournament. At the European Championships – Short Course, she finished second and won a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle event. She added another silver medal to her medals tally in 2007 when she finished second in the 400 meter freestyle event. She is the 2008 European Champion of the 400 meter freestyle event, in which she created the world record in the women’s 400 meter freestyle event with a time of 4:01.53. On March 24, 2008, Pellegrini achieved this feat in the final of the European Championships held at Eindhoven. She also won a silver and bronze medal at the same championships in 4 x 100 meter freestyle and 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay events.

Federica Pellegrini is 177 centimeters tall, weighs 59 kilos, and her specialty in swimming is Free Style. She participates in 50, 100, 200 and 400 meter freestyle, and 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay events, out of which she prefers participating in 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter freestyle events. Her personal best in the 50 meter freestyle is 25.47 seconds and in the 100 meter freestyle is 54.40 seconds. She is a fan of the Juventus football club and admires Valentino Rossi, an Italian professional motorcycle racer and a multiple MotoGP World Champion. Apart from her swimming, she loves puppets and teddies, and music is her favorite hobby. Federica has also been featured on the covers of several magazines in Italy.
