Giulia Quintavalle, born March 6, 1983 in Livorno, Italy is an Italian judoka. She started practicing judo at the age of 5 in the gym with the Solvay Rosignano Renato Cantini. After several years of following her coach she moved to the gym at the Kodokan Cecina which she attended until her debut as a professional. At the same time where she practiced judo at Rosignano, the town where she lived in those years, she also dabbled in gymnastics, basketball and swimming, but judo remains her one true passion. At 16, the Olympic Centre in Rome invited her for retreats, meetings and workshops and this will became a fixture for Julia for years to come. In 2000 her first important results were obtained in Cyprus, reaching 5th degree at the European Championships and 3rd degree at the Italian Championship Senior Foligno. On November 5, 2002 she was enrolled in the sports group of the Guardia di Finanza.

In later years she always rises to the podium: 2nd in the International Tournament in Portugal and in the 3rd International Tournament of France won the title in the Absolute Italian first in Genoa in 2005, and then in Pesaro in 2006. With these results, her workouts became more intense beside teacher Felix Mariani, she followed her path as an athlete like: Jennifer Gall, Giorgio Vismara, Girolamo Giovinazzo, Massimo Monti and Michael Sullivan. Attitude put Giulia on the podium in 2005 at the Mediterranean Games in Almeria, Spain as 3rd degree and in the same year she is ranked 5th at European Championships in Rotterdam. The year 2006 sees her again on the podium at the World Military Games held in Croatia with the 3rd degree position - the last race in which she took part in at the 63 kilogram category and ever since 2007 Giulia has been training for the 57 kilogram category.

This is not an easy step and is one that will cost sacrifices and long diets. In this year, and with the "new weight" she is ranked 2nd in the International Tournament in Moscow and 5th at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This was a very important result because it allowed her to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Before this great event she is ranked 2nd in the International Tournament in the City of Rome and 5th degree at European Championships in Lisbon. Her dream came true on 11 August 2008 with winning the Olympic gold in Beijing, the first Italian gold obtained in the history of women's judo, achieved with the help of her current coach Felix Mariani and the grit, determination and skill that marks a champion.
