Javicia Leslie

Javicia LeslieJavicia Leslie, born on May 30th in Augsburg, Germany is an American actress. She will play the title role in the television series Batwoman. She previously appeared in two seasons of the series God Friended Me.

She was in the 2019 film Always a Bridesmaid and appeared in the BET series The Family Business. Leslie was cast in the role of Ryan Wilder, replacing Ruby Rose for the second season of Batwoman.

Her family moved to Maryland where she grew up in Upper Marlboro. She attended Hampton University.

Javicia Leslie has been cast in the role for The CW's Batwoman series - making her the first Black actress to step into the iconic role for a live-action TV show or movie.

"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman."

"I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," said Leslie in a press release.

Javicia LeslieLeslie will make her debut as the superhero in January 2021, when the series is set to return to The CW for season 2. In the new season, Leslie will play Ryan Wilder, described as "likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed."

Warner Bros. official character description said that the new character is "nothing like Kate Kane," who was portrayed in season 1 by Ruby Rose.

Leslie shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday, writing in the caption of the post, "For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day - it’s possible!"

Ruby Rose announced in May that she would be stepping away from the show:

"I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season," Rose said in a statement. "This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles."

Rose congratulated Leslie on the achievement via her own Instagram. She wrote, "OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman."

"I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing !!"

Javicia LeslieSeason 2 of Batwoman, which will premiere next January, will continue to follow an LGBTQ character in the title role. However, Leslie won't be reprising Rose's Kate Kane. She'll be portraying the newly-crafted role of Ryan Wilder. This new character has been described this way:

"She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her."

"With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits."

"Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and also could kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian."

"Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."

This actress has been performing professionally for the last decade. Prior to her headline-making casting, Leslie appeared in several films and TV shows.

Most notably, she played the outspoken Ali Finer on CBS' God Friended Me, which ended earlier this year.

She also starred in the 2019 rom-com Always a Bridesmaid, which you can watch on Netflix. Her other credits include episodes of the BET series The Family Business, CBS series MacGyver, and the Lifetime movie Swim at Your Own Risk.

Javicia LeslieShe also has other aspirations, such as directing her own films. In June, she shared an on-set photo of herself captioned, "This is the power of intention. It’s a daily ritual of mine to speak my goals into existence."

When Leslie isn't filming a project, she's passionate about working out and sharing recipes with her nearly 94K Instagram followers. This spring she posted a recipe for a vegan gluten-free granola and in June, she posted her latest fitness routine, with an inspirational message.

"Change is the only constant. I’ve decided to dive into a passion I’ve had for a while now. Since there seems to be nothing but time, I really have no excuse. So I am going to document my Muay Thai journey with you everyone."

"A lot of people fear what it takes to maximize their potential, but on the other side of that fear is an expansive world of endless opportunity! Do the work... it’s worth it!"

Her first starring role came in 2016 television film “Killer Coach.” Leslie has appeared in several television series including "MacGyver," on the Network, “Chef Julian” and “Prototype.”

In 2017 Leslie filmed a role as one of the leads in the film “The Family Business,” based on the novel by New York Times bestselling author Carl Weber.

Javicia LeslieOnstage, Leslie appeared in several productions at Hampton University, including “Seven Guitars,” “For Colored Girls” and “Chicago.”

As recently featured in Women’s Health and Emmy Magazine, she also appears in "Nine Months After" which centers on the lives of two individuals, Jaye (Javicia Leslie) and Marcus (Marcus Dupree), who have spent 3 years together in an intimate relationship before deciding to part ways.

The journey of Marcus and Jaye following the break-up is a tumultuous one that I feel many will be able to relate to. My objective in creating this series was to exemplify the good, the bad, and ugly with respect to Black Love.

There are no villains or heroes; just two who fight like hell to either make things work or move past one another.

Exceptionally driven, stunningly beautiful and charismatic, Javicia Leslie, is best known for her breakout series regular role on CBS’ #1 drama, “God Friended Me” as the quick witted and level headed lesbian daughter of ‘Reverend Finer’ (Scandal’s Emmy-nominated Joe Morton).

Written by Lilien and Wynbrandt and to be directed by Siega, God Friended Me is described as a humorous, uplifting series, which explores questions of faith, existence, and science.

It centers on an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he is “friended” by God on Facebook. Unwittingly, he becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him.

Javicia LeslieLeslie will play Ali Finer. Bright, compassionate and opinionated, Miles’ (Brandon Micheal Hall) younger sister is always in his corner to provide encouragement and honest insight. She is also working on her PhD in psychology.

Javicia can be seen captivating an audience of over 10 million people each week in the US as the “…most watched freshman series last year” and she can be seen in 265 countries around the globe in over 65 different languages.

Recently Javicia has been scene stealing on Carl Weber’s “The Family Business”. Born in Germany to military parents, Javicia was primarily raised in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

With a passion for performing early on, Javicia started small with talent shows, going on to perform leading roles in plays, and live poems, all while keeping up with an early love for fitness by participating in track and field.

From senior year high school president, she went on to historically black college, Hampton University, where she appeared in several productions including “Seven Guitars,” “For Colored Girls” and “Chicago.”

Following graduation, she took on a job while working in D.C. helping soldiers and their families all while producing her own play and starting to test the waters with television hosting.

When she landed her first agent, she knew she wanted to pursue acting and the performing arts as a career full-time, so she left her job, packed up, and set out with her sights on Los Angeles.

Javicia LeslieWithout any friends or family in the city and just spent a month living in Los Angeles, Javicia was discovered working the booth of a pop-up shop event which catapulted her acting journey.

She quickly gained major visibility with the Lifetime Movie KILLER COACH in 2016 which only continued to propel her forward with the TV series "Chef Julian" and her recurring appearances on the CBS "MacGyver" reboot.

As if that wasn’t enough to keep Javicia busy, she starred as a lead in Carl Weber’s “The Family Business” alongside acting vet, Ernie Hudson on BET, consistently ranked as one of the top 10 cable shows on TV during its run.

As driven philanthropically as she is in her career, she has started an annual charity drive to give back to youth in her community, this year collecting donations of sports items via her charity, The Chandler Foundation.

Splitting her time between Los Angeles and New York City, when Javicia isn’t filming, she spends her free time planning her next charity event, spending time with her dog, Judah, and staying fit through her passion for fitness that includes a vegan diet.
