Louise Hazel

Louise Hazel, born 6 October 1985 in Southwark, London, England is an athlete who specialises in the multi-event heptathlon. She has competed in four major international championships. The first was in 2006 when she came 17th at the European Championships and the second was three years later when she finished 14th at the World Championships. During 2009 she was ranked 2nd best in the country and 9th best of all time. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games she won the gold medal for the England team, with a personal best of 6156 points. At the 2011 Mehrkampf-Meeting Ratingen she scored 6166 points but this included wind-assisted performances.

Hazel was born in London and enjoyed sports as a child. Encouraged by her father she began training at age 10 at the local athletics club. She was educated at Neale-Wade Community College in Cambridgeshire and graduated with a BA in French from the University of Birmingham. While at university she joined the renowned Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club. She has had frequent appearances as part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Athletics Team since the tender age of fifteen. As a Birchfield Harrier, she would train six times weekly at Birmingham’s High Performance Centre which is based at the Alexander Stadium, Perry Barr.

Her Senior debut came in 2006 at the European Championships in Sweden. On the first day of competition, she was lined up against former Olympic Champion Carolina Kluft for the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meters where she completed both races in personal best times. Louise ended the competition with a performance of 5892 points, ranking her 11th Best British Heptathlete Ever. This earned her the reputation of being an athlete that rises to the big occasions and reinforces her belief that;

“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog!
- Mark Twain

Following this success, Louise moved to France as part of her course studies at university, where she trained with the national decathlon squad. Unfortunately, the change of direction proved too much as her year was plagued by injury and she was unable to repeat the form she had shown in 2006. 2008 proved to be a testing year and a turning point in her life. Still struggling with injury, and trying to cope with bereavement, her Lottery Funding was withdrawn, all while trying to successfully complete her final year exams. Louise's dream of competing at the Olympic Games in Bejing was shattered.

However, true to her nature she came bouncing back in 2009, twice as strong and twice as hungry. Louise smashed her personal best heptathlon score by 150 points and booked herself a flight to the World Championships in Berlin, where she enjoyed the most amazing athletics experience and finished in 14th place - an achievement which seemed unattainable just 12 months previously.

In 2010 Hazel missed out on the European Championships as she failed to secure the qualification standard of 6100 points. Rather than chase the standard she wanted to focus on her high jump in order to try and secure a medal at the Commonwealth games in Delhi. A few months later she became the Commonwealth Heptathlon Gold Medallist having improved her high jump and achieved four personal best performances in the 100 meter hurdles, 200 meters, long jump and javelin. Louise finally went on to win the Gold Medal with 6156 points, a new personal best score.
