Fabiana Murer, born 16 March 1981 in Campinas, Brazil is a pole vaulter. She holds the South American record in the event with an indoor best of 4.82 meters and an outdoor best of 4.85 meters, making her the fourth highest vaulter ever. She won the gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships and also won at the 2007 Pan American Games. Murer represented Brazil at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She is a four-time South American Champion with wins in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011. Murer is coached by her husband, Élson Miranda de Souza, a former vaulter himself, with a personal best of 5.02 meters, obtained when winning the 1989 Brazilian National Championships, "Troféu Brasil".

Murer set an outdoor personal best of 4.80 meters in June 2008 in São Paulo. This was a South American record. She finished tenth at the 2008 Summer Olympics with a vault of 4.50 meters, unable to scale the heights that she had in June. During the competition, the organization lost one of Murer's poles, causing her to underperform as she spent over 10 minutes trying to get the pole back. She improved her outdoor record to 4.82 meters in June 2009 at the Troféu Brasil Caixa de Atletismo meet. She made the jump en-route to winning her fifth Brazilian championship in the event, breaking the area record for the eleventh time and placing joint sixth in the alltime lists. She competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin but she failed to match her early season form, finishing with a best clearance of 4.55 meters.

She improved to 4.60 meters at the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Final, winning the silver medal. At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Murer took advantage of Yelena Isinbayeva's failure at 4.75 meters and continued at 4.80 meters, clearing first time and winning her first global championships. Murer improved her indoor mark to 4.83 meters at the Grand Prix in Birmingham, United Kingdom. She further improved her outdoor record in June to 4.85 meters at the 2010 Ibero-American Championships in San Fernando, Spain. This mark placed her as the fourth greatest pole vaulter on the all-time lists, and she then attempted 4.93 meters, but failed three times.

She was dominant on the 2010 IAAF Diamond League circuit, winning three out of the six diamond race events. Her vault of 4.81 meters to win at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting made her the inaugural Diamond League winner of the women's pole vault. She was selected to represent the Americas team at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup and although she won the bronze medal, her mark of 4.50 meters was far from her year's best. She retained her national title at the Troféu Brasil de Atletismo, vaulting 4.70 meters to bring a close to her season. In 2011, Murer became the first Brazilian to win the IAAF World Championship, vaulting 4.85 meters at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu. Undoubtedly, the growth and evolution of women’s Pole Vault has been dramatically marked by the Great Russian Yelena Isinbayeva – two-time Olympic Champion, two-time IAAF World Champion, and setter of 27 World Records. But from Brazil has emerged the figure of an athlete who trains with Isinbayeva, has been inspired by the Russian, and seems capable of collecting medals at major events: Fabiana de Almeida Murer.

Born in Campinas, State of São Paulo on 16 March 1981, and possessor or 18 South American records – 9 outdoors (4.82 meters ’09) and 9 indoors (4.81 meters ’09) – Murer has also won every possible title in her region: Pan-American Games, South American Championships and “Campeonato Iberoamericano”, but at the international level, her biggest achievements are only a bronze medal at the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and a silver medal at the 2006 World Cup.

"It’s been somehow frustrating to come home with our hands empty from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin," expresses Élson Miranda de Souza, the 44-year-old coach of Murer. "And it was frustrating because the results obtained by Fabiana during each one of those years weren’t repeated in those competitions, and we later could see that marks possible for her would have brought a medal."

Due to a logistical problem with her vaults, Murer could only manage a tenth place showing in Beijing, and a year later a fifth place finish in Berlin, where the “open competition”, due to three fouls by Isinbayeva, was taken by Poland’s Anna Rogowska with a “modest” mark of 4.75 meters.

"These past two years have represented a great evolution for me," Murer says. "I was always able of improving my marks, I keep on learning new things at international events, but for some reason I wasn’t able to reach my whole potential at the two main competitions, something that should have been expected, due to my form. Yet, that’s something that for me is encouraging: I need to train more and mend some technical issues, and in the future I will be on the podium."
