Elizabeth Parnov

Elizabeth Parnov, born 9 May 1994 in Moscow, Russia is an Australian athlete who competes in pole vault. She was the Australian National Champion in the event in 2010, jumping 4.40m weeks before she turned 16 years old. She has strong athletic pedigree, being the niece of Tatiana Grigorieva, who won the silver medal for Australia in the women's pole vault at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and the granddaughter of Natalya Pechonkina, who won the bronze medal for the USSR in the women's 400 meters at the 1968 Summer Olympics. She is coached by her father Alex Parnov, himself a former world class pole vaulter. Her older sister Vicky also competes in Pole Vault and is the 2012 Australian national champion. She moved to Australia with her family in 1996, at the age of two. At the first Youth Olympic Games she was selected to be the Australian flag bearer. She came home with a silver medal. She also won a silver medal at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics, held in Lille, France. Her personal best of 4.50 meters, achieved February 17, 2012 at Perth, is the Australian under-20 record, surpassing the record of her sister that she had tied in winning the Australian National Championship in 2010. While she was still age 17 at the time of the jump, which surpassed the World Youth Record, she was not eligible for the record because she turns 18 in 2012.

Parnov is still in a state of disbelief after winning the national title in Perth in March 2010 with 4.40m - the highest-ever jump by a 15-year-old. The Perth schoolgirl is the daughter of master coach Alex Parnov, who was influential in helping Steve Hooker achieve Olympic and world championships gold. While expectations will probably be sky high for Liz by the time the 2012 London Olympics roll around, for now she's just enjoying being the baby of the team.

"I'm just going to the Commonwealth Games to have fun, to do my best and try jump as high as I can." Parnov said. "It's really just about learning and gaining experience for me because I'm still young. I'm not putting pressure on myself to get medals or anything like that. Everyone knows I'm young so it's not like they're pushing me to do anything crazy."

It's likely a jump in the 4.60s will be needed to win gold in India but Parnov, who will also compete at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August, isn't aiming for anywhere near that just yet.

"I was kind of close to jumping 4.50 at nationals so I don't think that's unrealistic for this season." she said. "I don't want to set any limits on how high I can jump."
