Melissa Wu, born 3 May 1992 in Sydney, NSW Australia is a diver who has won silver medals at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships, the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the Beijing 2008 Olympics. She as an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. Wu began diving only in 2003 . After winning a number of junior and state titles in 2004 and 2005, her first big breakthrough came with a win in the 10 meter platform at the Australian Open Diving Championships in 2006 where she finished ahead of Olympic medallists Chantelle Newbery and Loudy Tourky. The win earned her a place on the Commonwealth Games team where she won a silver medal on the synchronised 10 meter platform with Alexandra Croak and finished fifth in the individual 10 meter platform.

In 2007, she defended her 10 meter platform title at the Australian Open and was selected for the World Championships where she won silver in the synchronised 10 meter platform and finished 11th in the individual event. In 2008, along with Briony Cole, Wu won a Silver Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for the synchronized 10 meter platform, becoming the youngest Australian ever in history to win an Olympic medal in diving. She also competed in the Women's 10 meter platform, making it into the finals, ending up ranked sixth out of twelve competitors. At age 16 she has medalled in every major international diving competition. In 2010 at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, Wu won a gold medal in the synchronised 10 meter platform with her partner Alexandra Croak and a silver medal in the women's 10 meter individual.

Wu attended Coverdale Christian School for her primary education and during her high school education she attended Christian Outreach College Brisbane, until 2008 where she at the end of grade 9 started home schooling through Brisbane school of distance education (BSDE). She is currently completing a Bachelor of Media at Macquarie University in Sydney. Country music singer John Williamson wrote and recorded a song about Wu called "Little Swallow, Baby Wu" during the sessions for his Hillbilly Road album, but the song has yet to see an official release. Wu is Australia's youngest Olympic diver and the cousin of Australian Rugby 7's player, James Stannard, and she is also the second cousin of Australian hurdler Jana Rawlinson.

Now living in Sydney, Melissa is currently in training for her second Olympic campaign at NSWIS, the New South Wales Institute of Sport. Melissa competes in the Women's 10 meter Individual Platform event, and also the Women's 10 meter Synchronised Platform. Currently diving for the Perfect 10 Diving Club, she trains under coach Chava Sobrino, who is touted as one of the best in the world. Melissa has enjoyed both national and international success since exploding into the elite diving echelon in 2006. She repeated her incredible Commonwealth Games success at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, where at just 16 years of age, she bagged another silver medal with partner Briony Cole in the Synchronised 10 meter Platform.

The Delhi Commonwealth Games were viewed as an important stepping-stone to the London 2012 Olympics, and, based on her recent incredible form and podium finishes, Melissa expects big results in London this year. Most recently, at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Adelaide, Melissa finished first and second for the Individual and Synchronised Events respectively. Now, with little time to go, Melissa is on track to reach her ultimate goal of Individual Olympic Gold in July. Melissa is of Chinese descent and is very close with her family. Interestingly, her sister Kirsten also represented Australia at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India in weightlifting.

Currently studying a Bachelor of Arts (Media) at Macquarie University and also a Certificate IV in Business (Fashion) at The Fashion Institute, Melissa is a dedicated student, who occasionally relaxes with a stint on the piano and drums. She admits that probably the only thing she can't do is cook, and that her specialty in the kitchen is mainly keeping away from it.
