Avril Mathie

Avril MathieAvril Mathie, born on the 26th of June in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She is a professional boxer, model and fitness expert.

She says in reference to herself: “I’m just a girl having a go at life and I hope that by my example I can inspire others to do the same.

I want to show people that an ordinary kid that was kicked out of her parents home at 15 years old could support herself through the final year of high school and go on to be anything she wants to be."

"In 2016 I moved from Australia to the United States without a visa, with no job, with no place to live and and supported myself in Miami, Florida - where I had no friends or support."

"Why did I choose such a difficult road...? Partly because I love an adventure, but mainly in order to pursue my dreams of becoming a boxing world champion, a model and role model. Basically, I wanted to have an impact.”

Avril started boxing late in 2012, and had her first amateur fight within 6 months. It was five years and 20 amateur fights later, she began her professional career in December of 2017.

She is now based between Miami where she trains out of the world famous 5th St Gym, and Athens, Greece where she trains out of the Perseas Boxing Club.

Shortly after turning professional, she was scouted and signed by one of the largest boxing management companies in the world, MTK Global and now has an undefeated professional record of 4 wins (2 by TKO) and 1 draw.

Avril MathieBut Avril is most well known for winning Miss Swimsuit USA International 2014 – the biggest swimsuit pageant in the world, as well as the $50,000 Las Vegas International Model Search in December 2015.

These two prestigious international titles as well as a top 5 placing at the Miss Fashion TV International Diamond Model awards in Cyprus 2012 are the reason for her being touted as Australia’s most successful ever pageant model.

Her achievements scored her lucrative contracts in the United States where she now resides.

Avril has worked part-time as a fitness and swimsuit model for the past 10 years while developing her athletic career.

The focused Mathie is enthusiastically preparing for her maiden professional title shot having overcome a recent injury sustained in a motorbike accident.

After kicking off her career in the paid ranks with two stoppage wins, Mathie took on Samantha Salazar for the vacant American Boxing Federation Continental Americas female bantamweight crown in St Petersburg, Florida on October 6th.

The fight was a draw on the judges scorecards, so the female bantamweight crown remains vacant for the time-being.

But, it was a rapid turnaround for the Miami-based boxer, who was hit by a motorbike in early August.

Mathie said: “Getting hit by a motorbike a few weeks ago was very frustrating. It happened on the day I was planning on starting my training camp so it put a bit of a spanner in the works!

Avril Mathie“I immediately tried to look at the positives – I didn’t actually break my leg. It was just a bit of a dent and a hardcore bruise so I made a speedy recovery."

“In the meantime, I worked with what I had and did as much training as I could given the circumstances.

I was ready to go a couple of weeks later and in the long run, the injury didn’t have much of an effect so I’m thankful for that."

I casually blew my podiatrist’s mind on Friday, at how fast I’ve got my strength back post broken ankle.

Shoutout to my physical therapist @inspirehealth, to myself for doing the work and eating right every single day, and @purespectrumhemp CBD for helping me recover faster and not be sore so I can push myself a little harder and extra every day to get stronger faster.

“I’m really excited to be fighting in the States for the first time as a professional. I fought half my amateur career here so I know what it’s about."

“I love to put on a show and I really love and appreciate the way the Americans get into boxing. They turn out to events and really get behind fighters.”

With different female boxers at different stages of their careers, the one thing that stands out is their passion for the sport. All have different options open to them - they don’t have to box, but they want to box.

Australian born Mathie is one such fighter. She likely will be fighting for world titles down the line, but a love for the sport has seen her mix rough training regimes and gruesome fights with a very successful modelling career:

“I just love boxing, it’s the thing I love to do the most, if you are doing boxing for the pay then get out of here.”

Avril MathieAt the age of 15 boxing might not have been a thought for Mathie, but the fighting spirit was perhaps evident even then. Kicked out of her family home at such a young age, Mathie was forced to go it alone:

“It was nothing bad, I had my views on what I should be allowed to do and they had theirs."

"At first, I went to a friends house and stayed in her loft. After a week my mum was begging me to come back and sort out our differences, but it was just like a repeat for 6 or 7 times after that, until I decided to move out permanently."

"At 16 I moved in with some friends and stayed in their spare room.”

The apparent turmoil and unsettling period didn’t prevent Mathie from graduating extremely high in her class, but a short-lived stint studying engineering at university ended when she realised it just wasn’t for her:

“I didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars and years of my life on something I couldn’t possibly care less about.”

Mathie spent time travelling and doing jobs in hospitality, working in bars and nightclubs before entering the world of modelling:

“I did random jobs for different brands, but when I was 18 working in a nightclub where they used to have beauty pageants with cash prizes, and one night they didn’t have enough girls so they asked some of us bar girls."

Avril Mathie"I ended up making it to the final and placed 2nd - and I thought this is great. So I started doing more and more, you get to know people."

"I entered and won a few bigger ones, and started to get invitations to the biggest pageants in the world."

"I won Miss Hawaiian Tropic Australia in 2012, Miss Swimsuit USA International in 2014 and Las Vegas International Model Search in 2015. I never really pursued modelling it sort of fell into my lap.”

Mathie was doing Muay Thai purely for fitness before an injury led her to a life in boxing, her competitive nature was a natural fit for her new sport.

Mathie left Australia because a boxing career there wasn’t really an option, so she moved to Miami:

“I didn’t start boxing until I was 25, and pursing boxing wasn’t really a viable option there. Even the best professionals have to hold down a job, you can’t live off boxing."

"When I was 28 I just thought I want to give boxing a proper effort - I’m good at it, and I thought I can’t wait any longer and America is where all the opportunities are.”

After 20 amateur fights, Mathie turned pro in 2017 and has compiled an unbeaten record of 5-0-1, the only blemish a disputed draw in her 3rd pro fight.

Mathie is now with the boxing powerhouse MTK Global and despite the late start in the sport, Mathie isn’t lowering her ambitions:

Avril Mathie“I am building my way up there, getting better opponents, improving as a fighter and looking to get that world title shot."

"I am not going away anytime soon, even if I get a world title I am not planning on leaving boxing for a while - I am in no rush."

"I have learnt that you can’t plan everything - injuries, things come up, and you can put too must pressure on yourself if you set a timetable. So I just take one fight at a time now.”

Mathie wants to change perceptions and inspire others to take up boxing:

“Where I think I am different is that I don’t come from a terrible background, I’m not struggling for money, I’m doing this purely because I want to and people can relate to me in a sense that I look like them and hopefully they think if she can do it, so can they.”

There is something really impressive about Mathie, her independence and drive, and leaving her previous life behind to chase her goals. As she says herself - she has choices and she has chosen boxing.

It’s easy to make excuses in life, Mathie makes none. She has given up plenty to give herself the best possible chance of success.

Women’s boxing is still a niche sport, but it’s getting there. Mathie and others are the new breed, the fresh talent that will see the sport thrive for many years to come.

Bonesetters Waiting Room

In the Bonesetter's Waiting Room:
Travels Through Indian Medicine

BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week India defies definition, and the story of medicine in India is similarly rich and complex: shaped by unique challenges and opportunities, uniting cutting-edge technological developments with ancient cultural traditions, fuelled by political changes which transformed the lives of millions and moulded by the energy of forceful individuals. Here, Aarathi Prasad investigates how Indian medicine came to be the way it is. Her travels will take her to bonesetter clinics in Jaipur and Hyderabad and the waiting-rooms of Bollywood's best plastic surgeons, and introduce her to traditional healers as well as the world-beating heart surgeon who is revolutionising treatment of the poor around the globe.

Like a Virgin

Exploring the Frontiers of Conception

Sexual evolution is a slippery business. Like all mammals, we humans seem to have been left no choice in the matter: even though it is costly, inefficient and dangerous, if we want to reproduce we simply have to have sex. Yet most human cultures tell the tale of a maiden who gives birth untouched by a man; and in the wild there are plenty of creatures such as turkeys, komodo dragons, sharks and the "Jesus Christ" lizard (which walks on water, too) that take various approaches to reproducing without sex.

In LIKE A VIRGIN, the biology writer Aarathi Prasad discusses how reproduction without sex is achieved in animals and explores why evolution hasn't made it an option for humans“ yet. In doing so, she provides a quirky, entertaining and perceptive overview of the mysteries of evolutionary biology, sex and reproduction – past, present and future.

It is a remarkable story that ranges across Greek mythology, natural history, agriculture, conservation and medicine; takes in some of the most exciting areas of developmental genetics and molecular biology that other popular science books largely ignore; and is packed full of a cast of amazing characters, be they obscure animals or eccentric scientists such as the respected geneticist Dr Helen Spurway who in the UK in the 1950s unwittingly sparked a nationwide search for a virgin mother.

There is now a plethora of strategies being developed in reproductive medicine that could ultimately keep our species going in a world of embellished sex: the creation of artificial eggs and sperm from bone marrow, labs-on-chips on which eggs are fertilized, silicone wombs and artificial wombs (where fetuses can spend their full nine months), and even research to prepare us for reproduction in space. What is more, we are finally beginning to understand what genetic modifications are needed to allow for the creation of women who could have babies without having sex. Now that we have the competent hand of science in our lives, will girls still need men?
