Ashton James Eaton, born January 21, 1988 in Bend, Oregon is an American decathlete who competes for the Oregon Track Club Elite team based in Eugene, Oregon. He currently holds the world record in the heptathlon. In 2008, Eaton won the decathlon at the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship. In 2009, Eaton defended his decathlon title at the NCAA Championships to win with 8,241 points. He also won the heptathlon title at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships with 5,988 points. Eaton won the Division I field athlete of the year award in 2009. At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, Eaton broke the heptathlon world record with a score of 6,499, eclipsing Dan O'Brien's 17-year-old mark by 23 points. In June 2010, he won his third consecutive NCAA decathlon title by finishing first in the decathlon with a personal best of 8,457 points.

In 2010 Ashton Eaton won The Bowerman, which has been described as the Track and Field version of the Heisman Trophy. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Eaton placed fifth overall. At the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Eaton placed second in the decathlon behind Trey Hardee. This earned him a place at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, in Berlin, where he finished 18th with a points total of 8061. He improved his own world record in the indoor heptathlon at the International Indoor Combined Events Meeting in Tallinn in February 2011. In spite of under-performing in the high jump he managed a score of 6568 points. In August 2011, at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, Eaton won the silver medal in the decathlon competition with a final points tally of 8505, losing first place to his compatriot Trey Hardee. In March 2012, at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Eaton won the gold medal in the heptathlon competition with a new world record 6645 winning 5 events - 60m, 60m hurdles, long jump, pole vault and 1000m out of 7, finished third for the rest - high jump and shot put while beating silver medal winner Oleksiy Kasyanov by 574 points.

He was the world record-holder in the indoor heptathlon after winning the 2010 NCAA championship with 6,499 points to break Dan O'Brien's 1993 mark by 25 points. Also became the first person in history to win three consecutive NCAA decathlon titles. The top combined event competitor among the college ranks finished his career with five straight NCAA Championships (2008 decathlon, 2009 heptathlon, 2009 decathlon, 2010 heptathlon, 2010 decathlon). The 2010 Bowerman Award winner. The 2010 USTFCCCA Outdoor and Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Put on a performance for the ages at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, winning three events and taking second in another. 2009 and 2010 Bowerman Award finalist. Represented Team USA in the decathlon at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin after finishing second at the 2009 USA Track & Field Championships with 8,075 points. The 2009 USTFCCCA Indoor & Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Year. Contributed 10 team points with his heptathlon win (5,988 points) as Oregon claimed its first ever NCAA Indoor Track & Field title in 2009. Matched that with a decathlon win (8,241 points) and 10 points for the national runners-up at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor meet. Accounted for nearly 90 points (89.5) during Oregon’s run of four straight Pac-10 championships (39.25 in 2010, 26 in 2009, 17.5 in 2008 and 6.75 in 2007). Was the top collegian at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials (8,122 points). Invaluable member of Oregon’s sprint, relay and long jump corps, in addition to the decathlon.

At the University of Oregon he is majoring in psychology and was one of only four Ducks to ever break 8,000 points in the decathlon, as a prep star in Mountain View, Ore., he won 2006 Oregon 4A state titles as a senior in 400 meters (48.69) and long jump (24-0 1/4w), and was runner-up in the 200 meters (22.10) to land athlete of the meet honors. He also lettered in football as a running back and wrestled. His grandfather, James Eaton, was a Michigan State halfback. He is engaged to Oregon heptathlete and Canadian Olympic hopeful Brianne Theisen.
