Natalie Anne Coughlin, born August 23, 1982 in Vallejo, California is a swimmer and an eleven-time Olympic medallist. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Coughlin became the first American female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympics and the first woman ever to win a 100 meter backstroke gold in two consecutive Olympics. Coughlin's success has earned her the World Swimmer of the Year Award one time and American Swimmer of the Year Award three times. She has won a total of forty-eight medals in major international competition, twenty-one gold, seventeen silver, and ten bronze spanning the Olympics, the World Championships, and the Pan Pacific Championships. Coughlin currently lives in Lafayette, California and is of Irish and one quarter Filipino heritage. She was born in Vallejo and went to school at St. Catherine of Siena School from kindergarten through eight grade. She attended Carondelet High School in Concord. Coughlin first began swimming at the local YMCA when she was only 10 months old.

In 1998 at age 15, she became the first swimmer to qualify for the Summer National in all 14 events. Prior to the 2004 Summer Olympics, Coughlin was a student athlete at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned a BA in psychology in 2005. Coughlin won 12 National Collegiate Athletic Association Swimmer of the Year honors in her first three years at UC-Berkeley. Coughlin worked as an in-studio host for MSNBC during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. In April 2009, Coughlin married Crow Canyon Sharks swim coach, Ethan Hall. One of Coughlin's favorite hobbies is cooking. During the 2008 Summer Olympics, she was invited to prepare a Chinese-themed dish on the Today show. She has appeared as a judge on Iron Chef America. Coughlin also competed in season 9 of Dancing with the Stars with the season one professional champion, Alec Mazo, but she was eliminated on the fifth episode. Coughlin also appeared in the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue wearing only body paint.

While in high school, Coughlin broke two individual National High School Records in the 200 yard individual medley at 1:58.45 and the 100 meter backstroke at 52.86. At the 9th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Coughlin won 3 medals, 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. She won her gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke with Diana Mocanu of Romania taking the silver and Antje Buschschulte of Germany taking the bronze. Coughlin won her silver medal in the women's 4x100 meter medley relay, teaming up with Megan Quann, Mary Descenza, and Erin Phenix. The Australians won the gold with the team of Calub, Jones, Thomas and Ryan. The team from China consisting of Shu, Xuejuan, Yi and Yanwei taking the bronze. Coughlin won her bronze medal in the 50 meter backstroke. Her fellow countrywoman, Haley Cope won gold and Antje Buschschulte won the silver.

At the 9th Pan Pacific Championships in Yokohama, Japan, Coughlin won 6 medals, 4 golds and 2 silvers. Coughlin won one of her gold medals in the women's 100 meter backstroke with a time of 59.72. The silver medal was awarded to Dyana Calub of Australia with a time of 1:01.49. Her fellow countrywoman, Haley Cope won the bronze with a time of 1:01.74. Coughlin won another of her gold medals in the women's 100 meter butterfly, with a time of 57.88. The second place finisher was Petria Thomas of Australia who got the silver medal with a time of 58.11. The third place finisher was Coughlin's fellow countrywoman, Jenny Thompson, who got the bronze medal with a time of 58.64. Coughlin won her third gold medal in the women's 100 meter freestyle with a time of 53.99. Jodie Henry of Australia won the silver medal with a time of 54.45 and fellow countrywoman Jenny Thompson won the bronze with a time of 54.75. Coughlin won her other gold medal in the women's 4x200 meter freestyle relay with Elizabeth Hill, Diana Munz, and Lindsay Benko. The Australian team of Thomas, Graham, Rooney and Mills won the silver and the Japanese team of Nagai, Yamada, Urabe and Mita won the bronze. Coughlin won 2 silver medals in the women's 4x100 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays.

In the 4x100 freestyle relay, Coughlin teamed with Lindsay Benko, Rhiannon Jeffrey, and Jenny Thompson to win the silver with a time of 3:40.23. At the 10th World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain, Coughlin won 2 medals, a gold and a silver. Coughlin won her gold medal in the women's 4x100 meter freestyle and a silver medal in the 4x100 meter medley. Coughlin won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in the women's 100 meter backstroke event and was a member of the silver medal women's 4×100 meter freestyle relay with Kara Lynn Joyce, Amanda Weir, and Jenny Thompson. She also broke a world record and won gold as a member of the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and obtained a silver in the 4x100 meter medley relay and a bronze in the 100 meter freestyle.

In Coughlin's second Olympics appearance, at Beijing in 2008, she became the first American female athlete to win six medals in one Olympics. She was elected joint captain of the US women's swimming team together with five-time Olympian Dara Torres and four-time Olympian Amanda Beard. Coughlin won the gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke at those Games, becoming the first woman to retain the gold medal position in that event. She had lost her world record to Kirsty Coventry, the eventual winner of the silver medal, in the semi-final. When receiving her medal, her lip was still bleeding where she had bitten it during the race to distract her from the pain in her legs. She won a silver medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, swimming with Lacey Nymeyer, Kara Lynn Joyce and Dara Torres, and also won bronze medals in the 200 meter individual medley, 4x200 meter freestyle relay, and the 100 meter freestyle. She won a silver medal in her final race in the 4x100 medley relay swimming with Rebecca Soni, Christine Magnuson, and Dara Torres.
