Kristen Wiig

Kristen WiigKristen Wiig, born on the 22nd of August 1973 in Canandaigua, New York, is an American actress, comedian, and writer best known for her work as a cast member on NBC's Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012. She was a member of the improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings, and has appeared in a number of television series and films, including Bridesmaids, MacGruber, Flight of the Conchords, Adventureland, Paul, and Arrested Development. Her voice over credits include Ruffnut in How to Train Your Dragon, Miss Hattie in Despicable Me, Lucy Wilde in Despicable Me 2 and Lola Bunny in the series The Looney Tunes Show.

In 2011, she co-wrote and starred in the 2011 comedy film, Bridesmaids, which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy, as well as nominations for the Academy Award and a BAFTA for the Best Original Screenplay. She has also collected four consecutive nominations from 2009 to 2012, for Emmy Awards as an Outstanding Supporting Actress for her roles on Saturday Night Live.

She is the daughter of Laurie J., an artist, and Jon J. Wiig, who ran a lake marina in Western New York state. Her father is of Norwegian and Irish ancestry and her mother is of English and Scottish descent - the name Wiig coming from the area of Sogn og Fjordane in Norway.

Wiig moved with her family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, at the age of three, and attended Nitrauer Elementary School and later moved to Rochester, New York, where she attended and graduated from Brighton High School. Wiig spent her first two college years at Roanoke College and then attended the University of Arizona, majoring in Art. When she enrolled in an acting class there to fulfill a course requirement, the teacher suggested that she should continue to act.

Kristen WiigShe dropped out of school and relocated to Los Angeles, where she joined the comedy troupe, The Groundlings, and labored at odd jobs in order to support herself. From then on Wiig has enjoyed phenomenal success and critical acclaim as a comedic actress on both television and film.

Most of the television work she has done has been in comedy, including performing at the Empty Stage Comedy Theatre. In 2003, she appeared in the Spike TV show The Joe Schmo Show, a spoof of reality television, in which she played Dr. Pat, a quack marriage counselor.

Her debut on Saturday Night Live was shortly into season 31, on November 12th, 2005 and she survived a Saturday Night Live budget cut to become a full member of their repertory cast at the start of Season 32 in 2006.

Her characters include Penelope, a neurotic attention-seeker - Kat, half of the musical duo Garth and Kat - Dooneese Maharelle on the Lawrence Welk show - Mindy Grayson in the Secret Word sketches - Gilly, a highly mischievous schoolgirl - Sue, who can't control her excitement over surprises - The Target Lady, a clerk at the chain store and kitsch collector - Shanna, a sexy woman whose actions and stories gross people out - Cheryl Bryant, a TV game show host who gives away big prizes and is always more excited about the prize than the winners are - Judy Grimes, a nervous travel agent - Jacqueline Seka, predatory host of the Cougar Den and Aunt Linda, a hard-to-please movie critic.

She has also taken the mick on real-life people such as celebrities like Björk, Lana Del Rey, Madonna, Kathie Lee Gifford, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift, Gwen Stefani, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Christine O'Donnell, Jennifer Tilly, Jamie Lee Curtis and legendary Katharine Hepburn.

Wiig has also performed comedy sketches in which she has portrayed former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, socialite Kris Jenner, finance whiz Suze Orman, journalist and news anchor Diane Sawyer, controversial cooking show host Paula Deen, FOX News commentator Greta Van Susteren and reality television star Kate Gosselin.

Kristen WiigWiig was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Saturday Night Live for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In December of 2009, she headlined in the Christmas special Saturday Night Live Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas, which featured new sketches with her character Gilly and highlights of older SNL clips.

Wiig was featured in Entertainment Weekly's list of 15 Great Performances for her various impersonations on Saturday Night Live in December 2008 and in their list of the 25 Funniest Women in Hollywood in April 2009. She had a role as the voice of Lola Bunny in the series The Looney Tunes Show.

Wiig's final performance as a cast member on Saturday Night Live was Season 37, Episode 22, which aired on May 19th, 2012 with Mick Jagger as host of the show. The closing celebration included Saturday Night Live alumni Amy Poehler, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell, Will Forte and Rachel Dratch, as well as Steve Martin and Jon Hamm. She herself returned to host the show on May 11th, 2013.

In the movies, Wiig appeared in Judd Apatow's 2007 comedy Knocked Up as a passive-aggressive assistant as well as in Jake Kasdan's Walk Hard, another Apatow-produced film, and in David Koepp's Ghost Town. She has also appeared in Greg Mottola's Adventureland, Mike Judge's Extract and in Whip It, Drew Barrymore's debut as a director.

Wiig also had a lead role as Ruth Buggs in Greg Mottola's comedy Paul and also appeared as a yoga teacher in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

In 2010, she appeared in the films MacGruber, the animated comedies Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, and Andrew Jarecki's All Good Things.

Kristen WiigIn 2011, she starred in the film Bridesmaids, which she co-wrote with fellow Groundlings performer Annie Mumolo for Universal Pictures. The film was released on May 13th, 2011 and became both a critical and box office success. It garnered two nominations for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy and Wiig herself was nominated for Best Actress-Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy at the 69th Golden Globe Awards.

The film also received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and the second nomination was for Best Supporting Actress for co-star Melissa McCarthy. The movie grossed over 280 million dollars worldwide.

Wiig recently starred in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues as well as reprising her role for Despicable Me 2 - she also finished work on How to Train Your Dragon 2. Next is the Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig. The movie tells the story of a “dreamer” embarking on a real life journey in a script that was written by Steve Conrad - based on the 1939 New Yorker story created by James Thurber.

In a recent interview with WGAL, she explained why many are so fascinated with this tale, and how the underlying principles have been made relevent to modern times.

According to Wiig: "What Steve did when he wrote the script was really special and brilliant in he took what we love about the character of Walter and modernized him in a way that we can all relate to. I think that's one of the reasons that the story is so timeless, because we can all relate to Walter. We're all a little bit of Walter in that we have a fantasy life and we all daydream. We all imagine our lives to be different."

Kristen Wiig“I was extremely flattered when Ben Stiller thought of me for the role because I knew he wasn't going for a broad comedy. I love to have the opportunities to do other things and in this past year, I worked on three smaller films that are much more dramatic in tone. You have to be given the chance to do that and prove that you can do it or at least try." Wiig said before explaining why comedic roles tend to find her.

"I think it's natural for people to associate you with the work that you're known for, and that makes complete sense to me. I had been on SNL for seven years and did a handful of movies, all of which were comedies, so I totally understand why people think that is all I do. So for Ben to think of me in this role, which I really wouldn't say is comedic even though it has funny moments, is great. For the most part, it's pretty subdued and subtle, and I was really excited for the opportunity."”

Wiig was married to actor Hayes Hargrove from 2005 to 2009. In 2011, she reportedly began dating The Strokes drummer Fabrizi, though they reportedly split in 2013. She was named one of PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2011 and she is part of Time's 2012 list of The 100 Most Influential People in the World.
